Department of chemistry, established in the year 2009, is one of the leading departments of the Govt. Arya Degree College, Nurpur. It provides a friendly and co-operative place for undergraduate science students to learn and study. The department has a dedicated faculty and non-teaching staff. The Qualified and inspiring faculty members are passionate about their subjects and use creativity with new technology in their teaching. The department maintains high standard of education through periodic tests, quizzes, seminars and lab projects. The laboratory is well equipped. The department has instruments like spectrophotometers, conductivity meters, pH meters, Digital electronic balance, Muffle furnace, Computers and other instruments; and adequate number of glassware and chemicals. Students gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge of handling chemicals that lays a strong foundation in chemistry. The teaching learning process stresses on developing scientific temperament and analytical problem solving skills in the students. Department is using audio video aids to teach classes.

Presently, the department has one Assistant Professor, two posts are lying vacant and has two Laboratory Staff members. Many students of this department have taken up teaching and research as their profession.

  • Determine molecular geometries using radius ratio Rules, VSEPR theory, and MO diagrams. Understand the concept of lattice energy and the role of ionic character in covalent bonds.
  • Understand the shapes of some inorganic molecules and ions by applying various theories. Recognize the Significance and application of chemical bonds, and their impact on properties.
  • Prepare solutions of different concentrations, standardization of solutions, and estimation of some of the chemical species from their solutions.
CHEM-121Organic Chemistry-I
  • Understand the properties and behaviors of organic compounds based on the fundamental concepts and identify various reactive intermediates during chemical reactions.
  • Apply fundamental concepts of stereochemistry for visualizing organic molecules in three dimensions.
  • Understand the preparation, properties and uses of various organic compounds with emphasis on aliphatic hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes and alkynes).
  • To determine melting and boiling point of organic compounds, separate organic compounds from their mixtures by using paper and thin layer chromatography, and synthesize some organic compounds.
CHEM-113Basic Analytical Chemistry-I
  • Know the basic concepts of analytical chemistry including, concept of sampling, errors during analysis, and presentation of experimental data/results.
  • Understand various methods of processing and preserving food along with various adulterants in some common food items and their analysis.
  • To know composition and determination of pH of soil and estimation of some ions in soil by complexometry.
  • Apply various qualitative and quantitative aspects of solvent extraction for metal ions and organic species along with a few techniques of extraction.
  • To determine the %age of Fe(II) and Cu(II) by titrations with K2Cr2O7 and Na2S2O3, respectively, and to measure refractive indices of pure solvents.
CHEM-123Basic Analytical Chemistry-II
  • Know basics of chromatography, various methods of chromatography along with separation of mixture of metal ions by paper chromatography.
  • Apply various types of chromatographic techniques, including thin layer, column, ion exchange, gas chromatography, and HPLC for the identification, purification, and separation of chemical species.
  • Comprehend the fundamental principles of gravimetric and volumetric analysis to determine the amount of known and unknown analytes in the samples.
  • Separate various mixtures by paper chromatography, dimethylglyoxime complexing, and distillation.

  • Apply the knowledge of the different atomic models, atomic and molecular mass, and mole concept.
